Prevention and Treatment of Foot Conditions in Children

The Importance of Children’s Podiatry

Children are particularly at risk for developing foot problems due to their growth and development. Problems can include bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, and other foot conditions. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to more serious problems later in life.

It is important for parents to have their children see our experienced podiatrist at Stand Tall Podiatry as soon as they start developing any foot problems. Our podiatrist will be able to diagnose the condition and prescribe the appropriate treatment. In some cases, a child may need only simple care such as custom orthotics, stretches and changes in footwear. However, in more serious cases our podiatrist may recommend surgery.

Podiatry Treatments for Pediatric Patients  at Stand Tall Podiatry

Here are some common pediatric foot problems:

Flat Feet: A flat foot is characterized by excessive rolling in of the feet or collapsed arches foot due to weakness or lack of balance in the muscles that support the arch. This condition can be caused by genetic factors, trauma (such as a fall), or biomechanical problems (such as high arches). Our podiatry treatment options include wearing custom-made orthotics or medical grade footwear, physical therapy, and surgery if necessary.

Achilles Tendonitis: Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It most often occurs in people who overuse their legs muscle (the calf) by running or playing sports. In adults, Achilles tendonitis is usually treated with rest and ice therapy. Children with mild to moderate symptoms may require only ice application for pain relief. If Achilles tendonitis becomes severe, other means such as cortisone injections may be necessary.

Bunions: A bunion (also known as hallux valgus) is a bony prominence caused by a shift in the position of the first metatarsal. Bunions can be caused by genetics, arthritis, ill-fitting shoes, abnormal foot function, or a foot injury. The symptoms of bunions include Overlapping toes. Persistent or intermittent pain. They can also develop due to a weakness in the ligaments that support the foot. Bunions can be painful and cause deformity of the foot if not treated. Our podiatry treatment options include wearing custom-made shoes or orthotics, physical therapy, and surgery if necessary.

Ingrown Toenails: An ingrown toenail is a condition that can bring discomfort, irritation, and possible infection. This condition is most common in people who have wide feet or ill-fitting footwear. Causes include high arches, poor cutting technique and wearing shoes that are too small or too tight. Our podiatry treatment includes removing the ingrown nail spike in a painless manner following a sterile island dressing. Home remedies such as soaking the toe in salt warm water for 10 minutes every day and applying a topical cream or adhesive bandage to heal the nail. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can lead to infection and subsequent surgery.
